A Trip to Salerno/1: The Duomo and the Crypt of St. Matthew
Discover the Beauty and Mystique of Salerno’s Historic Cathedral
Hello everyone! Today, I want to take you on a journey to a place outside of Rome that has captured my heart: the “Basilica Cattedrale Primaziale Metropolitana Minore di Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo e San Gregorio VII”, commonly known as the Duomo di Salerno. Although I usually write about the wonders of Rome, this gem in Salerno is so captivating that I felt compelled to share it with you.
he Duomo di Salerno, also known as the Cathedral of St. Matthew, is a magnificent structure that dates back to the 11th century. Commissioned by Robert Guiscard, a Norman knight, and consecrated in 1085, the cathedral stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural splendor.
The cathedral’s exterior is an impressive blend of Romanesque and Baroque styles, featuring a grand bell tower and an intricately decorated facade. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful fusion of artistry and spirituality, with stunning mosaics, elegant arches, and a serene atmosphere that invites reflection.
One of the most enchanting aspects of the Duomo di Salerno is the Crypt of St. Matthew, located beneath the main altar. This crypt is believed to house the relics of St. Matthew the Apostle, making it a significant pilgrimage site for the faithful.
The crypt is a marvel of Baroque art, adorned with exquisite marble, intricate stuccoes, and beautiful frescoes that depict scenes from the life of St. Matthew. The soft lighting and the sacred ambiance create an otherworldly experience, making it a place of profound peace and contemplation.
I frequently visit Salerno to see my parents, and each trip includes a visit to the Duomo and its crypt. The cathedral and crypt are so mesmerizing that I find myself drawn to them time and time again.

Whether it's capturing the beauty of the cathedral by day or photographing the crypt's mystical glow at night, each visit offers new perspectives and deeper appreciation.
If you find yourself with some extra time, I highly recommend taking a trip to Salerno. Salerno is easily reachable from Rome by train in 2 hours.
The city itself is charming, with beautiful coastal views, vibrant streets, and a rich history that’s evident at every turn. The Duomo and the Crypt of St. Matthew are must-see attractions that provide a unique glimpse into the region's religious and cultural heritage.
So next time you’re planning your travels in Italy, consider adding Salerno to your itinerary. The blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and artistic brilliance makes it a destination well worth exploring.

Back in May, on my first proper visit to Italia, bleary-eyed and befuddled after a nearly 20-hour journey involving 3 planes and then a 45-minute train ride from Malatesta to Milano Centrale, I got on the wrong train. I was meant to get on the train to Parma, but instead got on the high-speed train on the other side of the platform. It turned out that its final destination was Salerno. Of course I got off at the first stop, but after reading this article, I almost wish that I'd stayed on the wrong train!
