Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli: A Sanctuary of History and Art in Rome
Discover the history, art, and spiritual charm of one of Rome’s most overlooked yet breathtaking churches.
No matter how many years I have wandered through Rome, I have yet to see all the churches this incredible city has to offer. There is always another hidden gem waiting to be discovered, ready to amaze me with its beauty and history. This was exactly the case with Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli, a breathtaking church that left me in awe.
Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli is a baroque masterpiece nestled in the heart of Rome. Its origins date back to the 6th century when Pope John I had a small oratory built to house a sacred image of the Virgin Mary.

However, it was in the 17th century that the current church took shape under the commission of Pope Alexander VII and the architectural genius of Carlo Rainaldi.

The church was constructed to venerate the miraculous image of the Virgin, which had been kept in the ancient Portico of Octavia and was credited with protecting the city from plagues and calamities.
As you step inside, you are immediately struck by the grandeur of the church's interior. The baroque design, with its elegant proportions and harmonious details, creates an atmosphere of solemn beauty. The high altar, designed by Rainaldi himself, is a magnificent focal point, featuring the revered image of the Virgin Mary in a splendid gilded frame.

The church also houses remarkable artworks, including paintings by Luca Giordano and Sebastiano Conca, as well as stunning sculptures that add to its spiritual and artistic richness. The interplay of light and shadow within the church enhances the intricate details, making every corner a visual delight.
Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli is located in Piazza di Campitelli, just a short walk from the Jewish Ghetto and the Teatro di Marcello. The easiest way to reach it is by walking from Piazza Venezia or taking public transportation.
If you're exploring Rome and looking for a lesser-known but absolutely stunning church to visit, Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli should be on your list.
