Hidden Treasures of Rome: Santa Maria della Pace
Discover the Church Built on a Miraculous Legend and Adorned with Artistic Masterpieces
Hello everyone! Today, I want to introduce you to one of Rome's charming and historically rich churches: Santa Maria della Pace. This beautiful church, located near Piazza Navona offers a glimpse into Rome's artistic and architectural heritage. Let's delve into its history, its captivating chapels, and the stunning artworks it houses.
The Church of Santa Maria della Pace was built in the late 15th century, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV. The church was constructed on the site of an earlier church, Sant'Andrea de Aquarizariis, and it was designed by the architect Baccio Pontelli. It was later modified by Pietro da Cortona in the 17th century, who added the distinctive Baroque facade and the semi-circular portico.
According to legend, in 1480, an image of the Virgin Mary located under a portico began to bleed after being struck by a stone thrown by a drunken soldier. This miraculous event led to the construction of the church, which was dedicated to "Our Lady of Peace" in gratitude for the Virgin's intercession.
Santa Maria della Pace is renowned for its beautiful chapels, each adorned with exquisite artworks:
Chigi Chapel: Commissioned by the wealthy banker Agostino Chigi, this chapel is a stunning example of Renaissance art. It features frescoes by Raphael depicting the Sibyls and Prophets, which are considered some of his finest works. The intricate details and vibrant colors make this chapel a must-see for art lovers.
Ponzetti Chapel: Another highlight is the Ponzetti Chapel, adorned with frescoes by Baldassare Peruzzi. The frescoes depict scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist and are noted for their delicate and expressive style. The chapel's serene and contemplative atmosphere provides a perfect setting for reflection.
Cesi Chapel: Decorated with frescoes by Rosso Fiorentino, the Cesi Chapel showcases the artist's distinctive mannerist style. The scenes depicted are from the Passion of Christ, characterized by dramatic compositions and vivid emotions. The chapel also features impressive statues of Saints Peter and Paul by the sculptor Vincenzo de' Rossi, adding to its grandeur and solemnity.
Olgiati Chapel: This chapel features works by the early Renaissance painter Antoniazzo Romano. The frescoes here depict the life of the Virgin Mary, rendered with a gentle and devotional quality.
Mignanelli Chapel: This chapel is adorned with frescoes by Maratta and others. It features beautiful stucco work and a harmonious design, making it a serene spot for contemplation.
Aside from the chapels, the church houses several other notable artworks.
Adjacent to the church is the famous Bramante Cloister, designed by the renowned architect Donato Bramante in the early 16th century. This serene and elegant space is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, featuring a harmonious arrangement of arches and columns. The cloister provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets of Rome and is often used for exhibitions and cultural events: in fact i often go there to visit the exhibitions it hosts, and in the future i will write dedicated posts about it.
