Hey everyone, again! Today, I’m thrilled to take you on a virtual tour of one of Rome’s most extraordinary ancient sites: the Domus Aurea. This grandiose palace, also known as Nero’s Golden House, is a marvel of ancient architecture and art that you absolutely must see when visiting Rome.
The Domus Aurea was constructed by Emperor Nero following the great fire of Rome in 64 AD. This opulent palace was designed to be a testament to Nero’s power and wealth, sprawling across 300 acres and adorned with lavish decorations. The name "Domus Aurea" translates to "Golden House," a fitting title given its extravagant design, which included gold leaf, precious stones, and intricate frescoes.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Domus Aurea is its "grotesques" – a unique style of fresco painting characterized by elaborate, fantastical designs featuring mythical creatures, intricate patterns, and vibrant colors. These decorations inspired Renaissance artists and continue to captivate visitors with their otherworldly beauty.
Walking through the high vaulted halls of the Domus Aurea is an experience like no other, filled with a sense of awe and wonder as you explore the stunning and fascinating remains of this ancient palace.
A highlight of the Domus Aurea experience is the virtual reality tour. This immersive experience allows you to see the palace as it once was, bringing the splendor of Nero’s Golden House to life. It’s an incredible way to step back in time and fully appreciate the scale and beauty of this ancient marvel.
Additionally, the Domus Aurea occasionally hosts special exhibitions. In 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting during a remarkable exhibition celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael. The exhibition featured a collection of Raphael's works and explored his influence on the Renaissance, making the visit even more memorable.
Here are some photos and videos from my 2022 visit.
The Domus Aurea is located on the Oppian Hill, near the Colosseum, at Via della Domus Aurea, 1. The site is open to visitors, but it’s essential to check the official website for the most current visiting hours and ticket information. Generally, it’s open from Friday to Sunday, but these times can vary, so it’s always best to verify before planning your visit.
Oh, and remember that inside the Domus it is quite cool, even during the summer months!
