Climbing to the Top of St. Peter’s Basilica: a Rewarding Experience
The Unforgettable Ascent with Breathtaking Views of Rome
Hello everyone! Today, I want to share with you one of the most incredible experiences in Rome: climbing to the top of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s a journey that’s both challenging and immensely rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the Eternal City that you won’t want to miss.
The dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, designed by Michelangelo, is one of the most iconic structures in Rome. Standing at 136 meters tall, it dominates the city’s skyline and provides an unparalleled vantage point. Climbing to the top is an adventure that allows you to appreciate the architectural marvels of the basilica up close and enjoy panoramic views that stretch across the entire city.
You have two options to start your ascent: taking the elevator or climbing the stairs. While the elevator saves you some effort by taking you up to the base of the dome, I highly recommend the full experience of climbing the stairs if you’re up for it. The elevator ride is convenient, but the stairs offer a more immersive and memorable journey.
Climbing the stairs is not for the faint-hearted. The narrow, winding staircases can be quite claustrophobic and strenuous, especially towards the top. However, the sense of accomplishment and the unique perspectives you gain along the way make it well worth the effort. You’ll pass through tight corridors, steep steps, and even walk along the inside of the dome itself, offering a fascinating glimpse into the basilica’s architectural details.
Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with one of the most stunning views in Rome. From the dome, you can see the entire Vatican City, the Tiber River, the sprawling rooftops of Rome, and beyond. The sight of St. Peter’s Square from above is particularly awe-inspiring, and on a clear day, you can see all the way to the Apennine Mountains.
On the other side, you can admire the Vatican Gardens.
During the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic, when tourist numbers were significantly reduced due to restrictions, I had the unique opportunity to climb the dome with very few people around. The usually crowded stairways and viewing platforms were almost empty, allowing me to take in the beauty and serenity of the experience in a way that’s rarely possible.
The tranquility and stillness at the top were profound, offering a rare chance to reflect and appreciate the magnificence of Rome without the usual hustle and bustle. It was a small silver lining during a challenging time, and it made the experience even more special.
Some advice in normal times: try to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Be prepared for a physically demanding climb. Wear comfortable shoes and take your time. If you suffer from claustrophobia, be aware that some sections of the stairway are very narrow and enclosed. Consider taking the elevator if this is a concern.
Climbing to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica is an unforgettable experience that offers unparalleled views and a deep sense of connection to Rome’s history and architecture. Whether you take the elevator or brave the stairs, the journey and the destination are both incredibly rewarding. Don’t miss the chance to see the city from one of its highest and most iconic points.

I didn't know that it was possible to ascend the dome on the inside. I did know that some people have undertaken the perilous ascent on the outside. In her memoirs, the salon hostess Mme de Boigne, who was in Rome in the early 1790s, recounts that a Miss Taylor capriciously challenged her fiancé, a Mr. Bootle, to climb the dome even though he was afraid of heights. He did it in front of a crowd of spectators and then broke off their engagement on the spot, admonishing her that power should not be abused.
