Another Path to Paradise: Do You Know the Clivo di Rocca Savella?
A Hidden Trail Leading to One of Rome's Most Beautiful Views at the Giardino degli Aranci
Today, I’m revealing one of my personal favorite paths in Rome — a hidden gem that not many tourists know about, despite leading to one of the most famous spots in the city (at least, I hope it’s well-known!). I'm talking about the Clivo di Rocca Savella, a peaceful and scenic route that takes you up to the Giardino degli Aranci, one of the most picturesque locations with a breathtaking view over the city.
The Clivo di Rocca Savella begins at the Lungotevere, near the Tiber Island, and winds its way up to the Aventine Hill, leading you straight to the Giardino degli Aranci (The Orange Garden). This ancient path dates back to medieval times and was part of the fortifications of Rocca Savella, which once guarded the hill.
As you walk up this historical trail, you’ll feel a sense of calm and beauty enveloping you.
Unlike the busier streets of Rome, the Clivo di Rocca Savella offers a tranquil escape, where the sounds of the city fade, and all you hear is the crunch of your footsteps and perhaps a few birds chirping. The climb itself is not difficult, but it is steep enough to give you the sense of ascending into a special and secluded place.
For me, the best time to take this path is in the evening, just before sunset. Whether you're climbing up or heading down from the Giardino degli Aranci, the panorama of Rome gradually reveals itself in all its golden-hour splendor. The rooftops, domes, and bell towers of the Eternal City seem to glow, with the Tiber River snaking below and the sky turning shades of pink and orange. The views from this path are nothing short of magical.
Reaching the top, you’ll be greeted by the peacefulness of the Giardino degli Aranci, where the panoramic view of Rome opens up in all its glory. It’s a place I often return to — sometimes on my own for a quiet moment of reflection (well, if and when there are not too many people… you have to be lucky), and other times with friends, eager to share this hidden path and the awe-inspiring view that awaits.
And even though I’ve taken this route countless times, the feeling of wonder and amazement never fades. There’s always something new to notice: the changing colors of the sky, the soft evening breeze, or the twinkling lights of the city as the sun sets.

The Clivo di Rocca Savella is easily accessible from Lungotevere, just across from Tiber Island. To find it: Head towards Lungotevere Aventino, near the base of the Aventine Hill. To find the starting point of the Clivo di Rocca Savella, use Tiber Island as your reference. The Clivo begins near the foot of the hill and winds its way up to the Giardino degli Aranci, making it a perfect and scenic walk for those looking to explore a quieter side of Rome.
Believe me: you’ll find that the climb is more than worth it once you reach the top and witness one of the most stunning views Rome has to offer!
As always, if you want to use any of the photos from my visit, please remember to give credit to the author. Happy exploring!
Mario. Absolutely stunning. Next time I’m in Rome, I’ll be looking for this path for sure.
This looks amazing. I need to make note of this for when we go back.
